World Golf News - 01 October 2010

In the United States tour veteran Jim Furyk claimed his third victory of the season when he won the Tour Championship on Sunday. Furyk, who briefly lost his overnight lead with a bogey on the opening hole at East Lake golf club, sprang back into the final round despite two bogeys in the closing three holes. A par at the eighteenth was sufficient to guarantee him a win in a tournament that had fans on edge. After he sunk his final putt, Furyk tossed the ball victoriously into the excited crowd who scrambled to catch a piece of golfing history. Second place in the tournament went to Luke Donald of the United Kingdom who had briefly shared the lead earlier that day, while South Africa's Retief Goosen took third place. This is the first year in which Furyk has won three tour events, a milestone in his already illustrious career.

On the European PGA Tour, the Vivendi Cup was won by England's John Parry. In a tournament that took place in fine autumn weather in beautiful Paris, the Englishman was victorious for the first time on the European tour. Johan Edfors of Sweden was two strokes behind in second place. Golf fans first saw the spark of a champion in Parry when he briefly lead in Austria earlier this year. Though he failed to retain that lead, Parry came to Paris experienced and ready to compete. This victory may be the first of many more from the talented young golfer. Ryder Cup team member Padraig Harrington broke his spell of bad luck on the course when he bounced back from barely making the cut on day three to finish in eighth place, a sign of his preparedness for this week's Ryder Cup.

The LPGA is in recess this week. Coverage of the ladies' tour will commence next week.

On the Champions Tour, the SAS Championship was snapped up by veteran golfer Russ Cochran of the United States. Leading the championship from day one, Cochran fended off last year's winner Tom Pernice Jr to win by two strokes after an exciting final round. Third place was shared by John Cook and Bernhard Lange.

Friday sees the opening day of the Ryder Cup. We will bring you a full review of the championship in next week's world golf news.
