On the US PGA Tour, Patrick Reed won his first professional championship at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.
Reed found himself in a playoff with fellow-rookie and compatriot Jordan Spieth after the final eighteen holes at Sedgefield Country Club. The two players finished even at 14-under-par for the tournament with both men carding an even score at the final hole to spark a playoff.
With mounting pressure at the first playoff hole, Reed and Spieth continued their sparring match on the course. The pair tied at the first extra hole, but a dramatic slice at the second tee caused Reed’s ball to find the rough – or so it appeared. The ball landed just within bounds, casting doubt on Reed’s chances at victory, but the American followed up with a phenomenal approach shot that saved the day.
Mustering his skill and keeping a level head, Reed managed to fire a seven-iron shot that landed just a few feet from the hole. After Spieth narrowly missed his birdie putt, Reed wasted no time and delivered a putt for victory that had the crowd electrified with excitement. With a victory in his rookie year, 23-year-old Reed may become a regular name on the PGA Tour as his career continues to develop.
In Women’s golf, the European Team claimed a decisive victory in the Solheim Cup last week with an 18-10 win against the United States.
The Europeans were keen to defend their 2011 victory at the tournament’s outset, and team captain Liselotte Neumann seemed elated when she and her fellow-players did just that. Caroline Hedwall, also from Sweden, made her mark on the tournament when she set a record by winning a total of five matches.
Despite the prize giving ceremony being delayed by bad weather on Sunday afternoon, the European team celebrated a job well done after a weekend of competitive golf. The United States team will have some strategizing to do as they prepare for the next Solheim Cup in 2015.
