Taylor wins first US PGA title at Sanderson Farms Championship
An elated Nick Taylor lifted the trophy at his first PGA Tour title on Sunday when the Canadian edged out his rivals in a two-stroke victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship.
Taylor began the final round four strokes off the pace, with the American John Rollins in the lead, but a series of precision drives and a great performance on the greens saw the Canadian snatch the lead on the front nine.
Jason Bohn and Boo Weekley, both of the United States, kept the pressure on Taylor on the back nine – but it was to no avail.
The Canadian’s much improved putting gave him an edge over his rivals during the closing holes of the tournament, with just one slip up on the last green. Nonetheless, his final round performance was sufficient to guarantee a maiden victory on the US PGA Tour – golf fans should keep an eye on Taylor as he continues his successful debut season.
Watson wins HSBC Champions in playoff
The European Tour travelled to China last week, where Bubba Watson beat South Africa’s Tim Clark to win the HSBC Champions in Shanghai on Sunday.
Watson eagled the final hole while Clark sank a birdie putt to force a playoff after a tense final round which saw both players finish tied at 11 under par. The South African had pulled off a comeback of sorts after high scores during the third round, with his accurate long shots allowing him to regain some ground on Sunday. Clark weathered the lengthy holes at Sheshan International Golf Course to put himself in the running, but the first extra hole proved too great a challenge.
Clark’s missed attempt at a chip-in on the one and only playoff hole opened the door for Watson’s victory putt, which sealed the tournament. The American has now beaten two South African greats on playoff holes, having won the 2012 US Masters against Louis Oosthuizen under similar conditions.
