World Golf News - 01 March 2012
On the US PGA Tour, the American John Huh won his first-ever title at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico on Sunday.
Huh, who joined the tour this season, lifted his first Tour trophy on just his fifth start. However, victory did not come easily to Huh, who battled it out against Australia’s Robert Allenby in an epic play-off that lasted 11 holes.
When both players finished the final round at 13-under, the mammoth play-off ensued. Allenby had double-bogeyed the final hole, and was keen to reverse his fortunes. For his part, Huh was keen to show golf fans that he is championship material. After 11 playoff holes, the second longest playoff in PGA Tour history, Huh was victorious.
Barely able to contain his excitement, the young champion lifted the trophy with great zest as he celebrated his maiden victory on the Tour. Allenby praised Huh’s golfing talent as well as his calm nerves as he told journalists of his frustration at losing a tournament which he had in the bag before his fateful double bogey at the 18th.
The European Tour is in recess this week as players prepare themselves for the WGC-Cadillac Championship that begins on the 8th of March. This prestigious event will see some of the world’s top players come together in Florida, taking advantage of the warm Spring weather to compete in the first tournament of the 2012 World Golf Championships.
On the LPGA Tour, the American Angela Stanford won her fifth career title when she triumphed at the HSBC Women’s Champions tournament in Singapore.
In a dramatic playoff against three other contenders, Stanford held her nerve and proved once again that her technique and experience is more than a match for the young talent currently taking centre stage on the LPGA.
