The European Ryder Cup team was victorious at the weekend, reclaiming the trophy in a nail-biting final day of play in Newport, Wales - which was delayed to Monday. European captain Colin Montgomery has been applauded for his leadership of the winners, as well as his wise selection of players who included some of Europe’s finest young golfing talents.
On the final day of the tournament which was delayed due to bad weather, the European team edged out a one point victory over Corey Pavin’s American team. Highlights of the final day’s play included Graeme McDowell’s victory over Hunter Mahan of the United States, and the American wildcard Rickie Fowler’s surprise victory over Edoardo Molinari of Italy. In the end, the European team won the event by 14 ½ points to 13 ½, a victory which is being celebrated by golf fans across the continent and in Britain. World number one Tiger Woods got off to a shaky start but regained his form during the course of the championship.
Though he has indicated that he will not captain the European team again, Colin Montgomerie of Scotland has won great acclaim for the success of his team. Selecting a group of young fiery players to face off against Corey Pavin’s dream team of high-ranking players from the US Tour, Montgomerie saw his strategy pay off on Monday when his team lifted the trophy.
While most eyes were on the Ryder Cup this weekend, the US PGA Tour continued its season in the absence of US team players. In Madison County, Mississippi the American Bill Haas won the Viking Classic with a three stroke lead over compatriot Michael Allen. This is Haas’ second career win on the US PGA Tour.
