World Golf News - 10 August 2011

On the US PGA Tour, the World Golf Championship (best known as the WGC) was won by Adam Scott of Australia. After securing the overnight lead, Scott enjoyed an almost flawless final round that saw his most serious challengers fall by the wayside. Scott made three birdies in the space of five holes, finishing with a final score of 65.

Scott’s greatest challenger on Sunday was Japanese golfing newcomer Ryo Ishikawa (19), who was keen to win his first title and break a tour record for youngest champion at the WGC. However, as play progressed on the final stretch it became clear that Scott had the upper hand. A bogey at the final hole saw the Japanese player finish third, tied with Australia’s Jason Day. Second place went to the American Rickie Fowler and Luke Donald of Britain.

Former world number one Tiger Woods, whose long-time former caddy now walks alongside Adam Scott, returned to the field at the WGC after a period of rehabilitation following an injury. While his fellow players expressed excitement at having the former champion back in the running, Woods finished in 15th place tied with several other players and far from the lead.

The European Tour was in recess as players from Britain and the Continent participated in the WGC. The tour resumes next week.

On the LPGA Tour, the Ladies Irish Open was won in style by Suzann Pettersen of Norway. In a brilliant final round that saw Pettersen extend her final score to 18 under par for the tournament, the 30-year old golfing sensation left her competitors far behind as she sailed to victory.

Second place in the tournament went to Spain’s Azahara Munoz Guijarro, who finished six strokes behind Pettersen. Melissa Reid of England and American Alison Walshe were tied for third.
