On the US PGA Tour, American David Toms made a striking comeback when he won the Colonial Invitational. Toms faced a narrow defeat last week at the Players Championship and was keen to assert himself on the US PGA Tour once again. Weathering a competitive final round that saw him pitted against South Korea’s Charlie Wi, Toms saw his way clear to victory from the moment he scored an eagle on par-five eleventh hole.

With his only bogey on the final round coming late in the day on the seventeenth, the seasoned golfer made par at the final hole to lift the trophy. For his part, Wi expressed his disappointment at not winning, but praised Toms’ skilful playing in the windy weather conditions that prevailed on the final day.

In Europe, the Madeira Open was won by Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland. This year’s Open saw several talented UK golfers battling for control of the lead through the third and fourth rounds, with Hoey and England’s Jamie Elson facing off after tying for first position after the third round. With two birdies and a bogey on his scorecard, Hoey kept his nerve with Elson keeping up the pressure throughout the final round. In the end however, it was Hoey’s final round of 71 that won him the tournament. Lifting the trophy after a two stroke win over Elson, the Northern Irishman celebrated his second career win on the European Tour.

In women’s golf, Norway’s Suzann Pettersen was victorious at the LPGA Matchplay Championship beating Cristie Kerr of the United States. On the final hole that saw Pettersen 1-up for the title, Kerr was faced with a 10 foot birdie putt to level the score. When Pettersen managed an unbelievable 15 foot putt for birdie, victory was hers.
